Buoy Failures Reported
The following instrument failures are reported for CarICOOS Data Buoy A:
July 2009 – The temperature sensor at 17 m was found to have very poor resolution. Data from this sensor was taken off line and reported as “sensor failure”
October 2009 – The SBE37 SM unit (a device for measuring temperature and salinity) at 1 m nominal depth has failed. Field tests indicate either an instrument or cable failure. New SBE37SM units are on order and the old unit will be swapped out as soon as practicable. Salinity data at 1m depth will be temporarily unavailable.
October 2009 – The NORTEK AWAC (Acoustic Wave and Current Meter) emplaced on the sea bottom adjacent to the buoy has failed. Diagnostics indicate battery depletion. The unit was recovered on October 29 for battery replacement. Wave and current data from this instrument will be temporarily unavailable. Current data at 2 m, gathered with an acoustic current meter (ACM) continues to be available.
